<description>My basic problem with the Secret is it's promise of easy riches. If you have a positive attitude and work hard to attain a goal, be it fiscal, love, whatever, I think that is fine. But by sitting around waiting, hoping for that phone call or check to come around, you're fooling yourself. By that measure, the Secret is a fraud.

<description>I read both The Secret and Alex Parker's comment with interest. I think there is definitely something real and worthwhile behind the ideas in The Secret. At the same time, books and dvds that cover this subject matter can take advantage of people who are desperate in the "wishing" department. Alex Parker is correct when he says that he thinks "there's more to do on your end of the bargain." I read the book that is mentioned as the inspiration for the author of The Secret, which is the book The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles, written in 1910. If I wanted to paraphrase the key idea in that book, it would not be only that thought attracts wealth, but that sustained thought combined with intuitive freedom and consistent action create wealth, or anything else one might want. Unfortunately, the desperate and wishful can concentrate on the "thinking" part of the equation. After years of scattered thinking and action, a few "positive" thoughts thrown out there won't do much. What I'm saying is that this idea can be trivialized and come off like "hooey" but it also has weight and depth if you check out the right sources. As for The Secret itself, the approach used in this amalgamation of ideas about attraction takes somewhat of a shallow tone. Whether or not this is because the promise of an easy route to wealth sells copies, I won't venture to guess. However, I don't blame anyone for thinking at first glance that it is nonsense.
