Gonna Dress You Up In My Lies
Recently, when I turn on the news, I am confronted by two constants… the election, and Madonna. In an effort to switch from my normal posts on political and DC related spin, I think Madonna and her public relations team could use a refresher course in the basics of the industry. Here are my three tips:
Rule one: DO NOT LIE
Liz Rosenberg (Madge’s pr rep since the cretaceous era) has recently come under fire for being caught blatantly lying about her client’s divorce. Not only does this make the press want to dig even deeper into their personal lives because you are lying, but it also makes you lose all credibility. Our industry is based on credibility.
Rule two: DO NOT SPIN
Liz, please get your information correct and then distribute it consistently. It’s not smart to say “trial separation” to one media outlet, “divorce” to another, and then deny they are even any problems to the last. This simply makes you and your client look stupid.
Rule three: KEEP YOUR NOSE CLEAR
As a follow-up to my first rule Liz, remember, your word is your livelihood and when you have been accused multiple times of bribery, threats, and blacklisting. This may achieve your desired results for you clients, but you know what? It makes you look pretty sad, and it gives the rest of us in the industry a not-so-glamorous black eye.
Keep these three things in mind when you wake up in what I am sure a bed padded with conical bras and hundred dollar bills. I am tired of being called a flack because of “industry professionals” like you.
