You might know Michael Schechter as the writer whose blog posts seem in your face, but are so out there they’re funny.

Take, for instance, last week. He wrote a guest post for Danny Brown called, “The Weird Thing I Want You to Do On My Blog,” where he talks about the trend of bloggers who monetize their work is equal to when they begin to suck. I kind of hope he’s wrong because we’ve been monetizing since last fall, but that’s neither here nor there.

His point is a good one and it caused A LOT of controversy. I mean, a lot.

His very first guest post for us, “Five Reasons I Lost Readers in 2010,” was so good that I ran it twice. It’s sarcastic and really funny, but it’s spot on, as well. As my friend Michael Stern always says, “It’s funny because it’s true.”

He’s humble and extremely giving. To illustrate both of those points, I direct you to Smarter Than I Am, where he quotes what people have said (both funny and brilliant quotes) who he believes are smarter than him.

The thing is? He’s wickedly smart. You have to be with his sense of humor.

And guess what? He’s not even a social media person. He’s the digital marketing director for his family’s business, Honora Pearls. He does social media, on the side, to really understand the parts of it that he can take back to his overall digital strategy. I love that.

When we were in New York for the conference that will no longer be named, he had an entire conversation with Molli Megasko about why wearing pearls doesn’t make you look innocent. Dude knows his stuff. I was ready to buy right then, right there.

So there you have it. Today’s #FollowFriday. Check Mike (or Shrek, as I call him) out on Twitter, Smarter Than I Am, and his blog. And definitely check out Honora. They have great gift ideas at all price levels for you guys. And for you girls? They have custom designing coming this month. I can’t wait for that!
