It’s Never to Late to Say “No, thanks!”

Making career choices is never easy!  Sometimes people accept jobs only to realize, they made a huge mistake.  My advice always is “Admit your error and fix it.”

Key to this philosophy is a well-worded resignation letter that explains your decision, shows gratitude, and respect.  Following is an example you can easily adapt to meet your future career needs.

Dear Senator McCain:

It is with respect and appreciation that I write to you today to withdraw my name from the ticket as your vice presidential running mate.  While I realize the timing of this decision is inconvenient, I think it may help you in the polls, and do what’s best for the country we love.

It’s been about a month since we spent most of the day together talking about the future of the United States.   We shared views on so many critical issues.  In hindsight, it’s on that day when I should have said, “Wow!  What an amazing opportunity!  I’m flattered, but I’m just not ready. “

Yet, as so often happens, I let the moment get the best of me.  The private planes, the parties, the big convention, and your camp even hired Tucker Eskew to help me know what to say and think on the campaign trail.  Who would ever imagined a former strategist for President George W. Bush would be helping me figure out how to leverage my soccer mom expertise and garner standing ovations in St. Paul ?!?!?!  That’s one for my diary!

I’m learning through my foreign affairs briefings and preparations for all of the media interviews that there’s just not enough time in the day!  My head is spinning with sound bytes and photo opportunities.

While I love being go-go busy, I’ve fished enough to know when it is time to cut bait!  So, before it’s too late, I think I need to refocus, regroup, and return to my full-time job as Governor of Alaska.  I’m pretty sure if you accept my resignation from the ticket today, there are others who can step in before your first debate this weekend!

Todd and I are forever grateful for this whirlwind opportunity and our 26 days being just one heartbeat away!

Good luck!

Respectfully,

Governor Sarah Palin
